  9. Install BackWeb today and you'll be on your way to getting personalized
  10. information, entertainment, and software from the Internet delivered
  11. automatically to your desktop. BackWeb makes this possible by sending
  12. data to you in the background, taking advantage of your Internet
  13. connection's idle time while you're connected to the net.
  14.  
  15. This means you no longer have to wait for long downloads or go out and
  16. search for information. You subscribe to the Channels you're interested
  17. in once and from then on information is automatically delivered to you.
  18.  
  19. The labor intensive Web surfing of the past is being replaced by the
  20. information intensive approach of BackWeb.  Let your computer and the
  21. Internet do the work for you for a change.

  23. An important feature offered by a beta version of our client software 
  24. (included in this CD under \CLIENT\CORP) is the ability to have your BackWeb
  25. software communicate over the Internet using the HTTP communication protocol.
  26. This is most important to users connected to the Internet over a corporate
  27. network (LAN) or through some online networks.  It does not affect most users
  28. of BackWeb over dialup connections with Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

  48. BackWeb can be installed under the following operating systems: Windows 95,
  49. Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 3.11 (a Mac version is coming soon).

  56. B. Subscribing to BackWeb Channels
  57. ============================================================================

  59. Go to the BackWeb Web site  http://www.backweb.com/ to subscribe to channels
  60. or sources of information that interest you.
  61. This subscription process is done through the Web, but after that you will
  62. receive the information from these channels through BackWeb.

  66. C. Important note for users connected to corporate Local Area Networks (LAN)
  67. ============================================================================

  69. We have released a beta version of our client software that works around the
  70. problem described below. This beta client currently supports Windows 95 and
  71. Windows NT 4.0, and can be installed from the \CLIENT\CORP\SETUP directory.

  73. Using the release version of the client (version 1.1), you might have
  74. difficulty receiving BackWeb information. Please read this section to
  75. understand why and how you can work around the issue.
  76.  
  77. If you are a corporate user with a direct connection to the Internet within
  78. a firewall-protected location, you may have difficulties using BackWeb.
  79. If you download BackWeb and do not receive any InfoFlashes from us, or get
  80. the message "server not responding", you are probably experiencing a problem
  81. related to your firewall.  Many firewalls are configured not to let through
  82. any UDP packets, thus blocking BackWeb communications when using this
  83. protocol .

  85. By default, BackWeb requires that your corporate firewall allows
  86. UDP packets with destination port 370 to go out from your network to
  87. the Internet, and UDP packets with destination port 371 to come in
  88. from the Internet to your network.
  89.  
  90. You can select the UDP port through which BackWeb will connect to the
  91. Internet from the Advanced Settings dialog in the Connection tab
  92. of the Setup dialog.
  93.  
  94. As said at the beginning, the new beta client works around this issue by 
  95. being able to communicate with the BackWeb channels using the standard HTTP
  96. protocol. This will allow anyone with an Internet connection to use BackWeb,
  97. regardless of firewalls or online services.
